Ethiopian journalist Sekalem Fasil honored Print E-mail

Serkalem Fasil Ethiopian journalist Sekalem Fasil has been honored by the Global Forum of Freedom of Expression in Oslo, Norway. Serkalem was jailed in the aftermath of the highly contested 2005 elections in Ethiopia. Before May 2005, Serkalem and her husband, Eskinder Nega, used to run two independent newspapers, Menelik and Satenaw, both shut down as a result of the total muzzeling of the Free Press by the regime.

Political Internet Filtering in Ethiopia
Ethiopia is the only country in sub-Saharan Africa to actively engage in political censorship of the Internet. Since May 2006, the top five most popular Ethiopian web sites (including CyberEthiopia) and several blogs have been blocked across the nation. The apparent objective is to prevent the dissemination of information that is critical of the regime.
