City to decide on closed businesses in Merkato

By Tedla Yeneakal

The current Addis Ababa City Administration will decide on closed businesses in the Merkato area including pioneer hotel businesses namely Kagnew Shaleka Hotel and Mirab Hotel, sources disclosed.

The administration will reportedly come to a decision in the coming weeks, as to whether these shops will be reopened or not, months after its decision to close them down with a time ultimatum to open up their shops.

Shops in Addis Ababa were largely closed and drivers remained on strike following riots and government warnings that any more violence would be dealt with sternly.

Local media had announced that the government has re-opened more than 400 shops in the major business districts of Arada and Merkato after it has proved that most of the shop owners closed down their businesses not as an expression of protest but rather for fear of damage to their properties.

Subsequent to the appeal of 388 businessmen to the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce, the chamber wrote letters to the Minister of Trade and Industry, Girma Birru, and the city administration calling for the reopening of the shops.

However, some shops still remain closed and are awaiting the decisions of the city administration. Businessmen Capital talked to fear that, if the decision is against them, they will lose their entire livelihoods since some of them depend on these shops as the only source of income to sustain themselves and their families.
Use soft words and hard arguments.
