News Advisory:

Local elected leaders from around the world will meet in Washington, DC from February 8 to 10 to discuss strengthening local government and the need for more targeted funding to cities and towns. The meeting of the Executive Bureau of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is co-sponsored by the National League of Cities and the City of Washington, DC.

A news conference will be held on Thursday, February 9 at 12:30 p.m. with Washington, DC, Mayor Anthony A. Williams, and UCLG Presidents, Paris, France, Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, and Quito, Ecuador, Mayor Paco Moncayo Gallegos as well as UCLG Treasurer, South Bay, Fla, Mayor Clarence Anthony. They will discuss specific outcomes from the meeting, including a proposal to target more funds directly to cities. The news conference will be held at 701 18th Street NW, Washington, DC, on the premises of the World Bank, which is providing its installations in support of this major event.

Due to security, any media planning on attending the news conference must contact Karen Rowson at 202-626-3120 or rowson@nlc.org by 10 a.m., Thursday, February 9. All other events are closed to the media.

During the two-day meeting, UCLG Presidents, Bertrand Delanoe, Mayor of Paris, and Paco Moncayo Gallegos, Mayor of Quito, will chair discussions in which mayors and local government association representatives from Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Barcelona (Spain), Brazzaville (Congo), Kazan (Russia), The Hague (The Netherlands), Maputo (Mozambique), Montreal (Canada), Beijing (China), Rabat (Morocco), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Stuttgart (Germany), and Sao Paulo (Brazil) will participate.

On Wednesday, Washington, DC, Mayor Anthony Williams, will lead a panel of mayors who will discuss relations between local governments and their central governments. In many countries, elected officials are being given ever-larger responsibilities in meeting the needs of their growing populations, but without the decision-making powers and financial resources necessary to do so. Williams is past president of the National League of Cities.

On Thursday, UCLG participants will meet with World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz and senior World Bank officials. In a separate action, UCLG will sign an agreement with the Cities Alliance, an international donor program, to develop global strategies for cities in the fields of financing and development.
