....Gebrselassie shows marathon class

Sunday, October 16, 2005 Posted: 1557 GMT (2357 HKT)

Gebrselassie is looking to extend his dominance on the track to the roads.LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Twice Olympic 10,000 meters champion Haile Gebrselassie showed his marathon potential with a superb victory in Amsterdam on Sunday in a new course record.

The 32-year-old Ethiopian, who retired from the track after last year's Athens Olympics, clocked two hours six minutes 20 seconds in his second race and first win over 42.195 kms.

Kutre Dulecha completed an Ethiopian double by winning the women's race in 2:30:06

Running alone for much of the race on a warm, still day, Gebrselassie was on world-record pace at 35 km but fell 50 seconds behind schedule over the next five km.

"I am not so happy," he said. "The last five km I was not pushing. I need more training."

Kenyan Paul Tergat, second to Gebrselassie over 10,000 meters at two Olympic Games and two world championships, set the men's world mark of 2:04:55 in Berlin on Sept. 28, 2003.

Kenyan Daniel Yego was second in 2:08:58 and Ethiopia's Tesfaye Tola third in 2:09:17.

Radcliffe return
Women's world marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe was also in winning action on Sunday in a 10 km road race in London.

It was the first time she had competed since her gold medal triumph at the World Championships in August and marks the start of her buildup to the Commonwealth games in Melbourne next March at which she has been entered for both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

Radcliffe clocked 32 minutes 19 seconds which was well outside the world mark of 30 minutes 21 seconds she ran in 2003.

In what was a mixed men/women race, Radcliffe placed third behind 19-year-old compatriot Keith Gerrard who clocked 31min 8sec and youngster Adam Hickey who was second in 31min 35sec.

"It was good to blow away the cobwebs," said Radcliffe who has been training at her base in the French Pyrenees.

"Sunday was like a run-out, doubling as a training session, I was not messing about but I knew I was not on for a world record time."
