Haile Gebrselassie, the Ethiopian distance runner considered one of the greatest of all time, has announced that he plans to stand for parliament with the aim of winning a seat in the country's 2015 election. The 40-year-old confirmed growing rumours that he was quitting athletics for politics on his Twitter account."A lot of messages in the news about me going into politics. Yes, I want to be in the parliament in 2015 to help my country to move forward," he tweeted.Gebrselassie is regarded as a national icon by many Ethiopians. He has set 27 world records, won two Olympic 10,000m golds in Atlanta and Sydney and four world championships at the same distance.Asked about his political ambitions by the Guardian in 2002, he said: "Eradicate poverty. This is all that matters in my country. When I am out training I think about this a lot; when I am running it is going over in my mind. As a country we cannot move forward until we eradicate poverty."He has yet to state which party he will run for in the general election.
Ethiopia's parliament is dominated by the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). There is only one opposition MP. The government has been accused by Human Rights Watch of waging a coordinated assault on political opponents, rights campaigners and journalists.

Gebrselassie announced his retirement in 2010 after suffering a knee injury in the New York City marathon. But he soon reversed his decision and went on to compete in further races. He is known for his distinctive running style, with the right arm swinging back and forth while the left arm remains static and cocked, which he says he developed while running to school carrying his books. In April this year, he won his third consecutive Vienna half marathon and also took part in the Great Manchester Run in May, finishing in 3rd place.

‘Robel The Whale’ – the Symbol for Nepotism
Ethiopia had begun its participation in Rio Olympic in an ever embarrassing 100 meters free style swimming race. Robel Kiros is the son of the President for Ethiopian Swimming Sport Federation. Robel went to Rio with his father. According to Addis Admass, a weekly Amharic newspaper, there were claims that his coach was not allowed to go to Rio with Robel because the budget allocated for the Olympic is used by his father. Robel finished the race 59th out of 59 participants and he finished it 17 seconds later to the pacesetter. His body wasn’t athletic at all and Ethiopian social media sphere was hit by criticism over his defeat and in question how he could make it to there.
The annoying fact is that Robel’s father is from Tigray, a region with 6% of Ethiopian population, from where the ruling group has emerged out. People took this as an act of nepotism not just because Kiros Habte (Robel’s Father) is from Tigray but also because all nine Ethiopia’s sports federations presidents are Tigrians. In the federal government of Ethiopia, most powerful positions are taken by Tigrians who are TPLF members and it was easy for everyone to easily take Robel’s embarrassing defeat at the Rio and his unprecedented participation as symbol to the nepotism widespread in the country.
Feyisa Lilesa – the Heroic Symbol for Public Protests
Ethiopia’s last participation in Rio was in men’s marathon race on which Feyisa Lilesa gave the world another but different experience than ‘Robel the whale’ had given. A husband and father for two, Feyisa Lilesa, has become silver medalist in Rio Marathon Men Race. Feyisa, upon crossing the finishing line of the race (and later when he sat for press conference), has displayed a political protest by crossing his arms up in a symbolic way Ethiopian political protesters use to show that they are not free.
Feyisa, unlike Robel, is from Oromia, the biggest and most populous region in Ethiopia’s federation. Oromo people have been protesting for at least the past 10 months continuously over injustices and marginalisation while losing more than 600 lives during brutal attempts of police to crackdown the protests. Feyisa, like Robel, has become a hot agenda in Ethiopian social media community but, again unlike Robel, it was with joy and admiration that everybody was referring to him.
From Robel To Feyisa
Robel is a privileged loser where as Feyisa is the un-favored winner. Robel is coming back to his country however it is too risky for Feyisa to enter the country. Feyisa himself said to journalists at Rio, “if not kill me, they will send me to prisons”. Robel vowed that he will participate in a better condition in the next Olympic Games to be held in 2020 in Tokyo. This seems unlikely for Feyisa. By gesturing political protest, Feyisa put his career at risk. He might face sanctions from International Olympic Committee for showing prohibited political gesture during the game.
On the other hand, Robel remains a hated symbol of nepotism in Ethiopia whereas Feyisa is already portraid as the son of his people. Feyisa may become Stateless or end up refugee in another country; and/or he may be revoked from the medalists list where he finished second; but, he will always remain the symbol of defiance at the hearts of concerned Ethiopians.

The four Ethiopian runners who disappeared from the IAAF Junior World Championships in Eugene this past weekend defected from their home country to avoid returning to widespread civil unrest there, police confirmed in a report released late Friday.

The report, provided by police in Federal Way, Washington, describes an interview with Zeyituna Mohammed, an 18-year-old woman runner on the Ethiopian national team. She told police that she and the other athletes decided to stay in the U.S. because they were too afraid to return to Ethiopia.

The report confirms for the first time what many close to the case, including the team's coaches, had suspected — that the athletes' disappearance was part of a plan to defect from Ethiopia.

Mohammed told authories she may seek asylum in the U.S., but she is not certain of her plans. It remains unclear whether the other three athletes, whom police found in Beaverton earlier this week, are planning to do so.

Federal Way police agreed to help University of Oregon police with the investigation when authorities learned Mohammed was staying with an acquaintance there.

On Wednesday, five days after the athletes were first reported missing, Federal Way police found Mohammed staying at the home of two Ethiopian natives, one of whom came from the same village Mohammed is from.

Through an interpreter, Mohammed described how the group left the University of Oregon campus unnoticed with help from an another runner on the team, who helped them arrange rides with Ethiopian connections in the area. The group was given a ride to Portland, and then Mohammed was picked up by another driver and taken to Federal Way.

Police found the other three runners — Amanuel Abebe Atibeha, a 17-year-old boy, and Dureti Edao and Meaza Kebede, 18-year-old women — in Beaverton on Monday.

Mohammed signed a contract with Nike and Edao with Adidas on July 25, just hours before the group disappeared, their coaches told University of Oregon police.

Edao told the coaches she needed to send a copy of her passport to the Adidas contract manager to finalize the agreement, according a report from UO police released this week. Coaches gave her a key to the room where the team's passports were kept.

Other members of the Ethiopian team later saw the four running with their bags and then hop into a white sedan, according to the UO police report. None of the other team members was able to identify the driver.

Coaches later said the four athletes' passports were missing. Police found the women athletes' rooms, in a UO dormitory, emptied of belongings.

Nike and Adidas have not provided details about the athletes' contracts.

In a statement Monday, university police said the athletes are permitted to stay in the U.S. under the terms of their visas. No time limit was given. Officials in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Citizenship and Immigration Services office declined to provide any further information.

Ethiopia’s Muktar Edris beats Mo Farah

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 12: Muktar Edris of Ethiopia does the "Mobot" as Mohamed Farah of Great Britain looks on after crossing the finishline in the Men's 5000 Metres final during day nine of the 16th IAAF World Athletics Championships London 2017 at The London Stadium on August 12, 2017 in London, United Kingdom. London, United Kingdom | AFP | British athletics legend Mo Farah narrowly failed to complete a fifth successive global double on Saturday when he finished second behind Ethiopian Muktar Edris in a thrilling 5,000 metres world final.

The 34-year-old, whose winning run in the 5,000m at Olympics and world finals stretched back to 2011, fought desperately to claw back the deficit in the finishing straight but Edris held on to win in 13min 32.79sec.

Farah, a two-time double world champion and two time double Olympic champion, finished in 13:33.22.

Farah, who had won the 10,000m last Friday to open the championships with a bang, said he couldn’t have given it more but added he had proved that it was possible to break up the Ethiopian and Kenya hegemony over the distance races.

“I gave it my all, 110 percent,” said Farah.

“I don’t think there was any more I could have done. They (the Ethiopians) run as a team.

“Never feel like you can’t beat the Kenyans and Ethiopians — anything is possible.”

American Paul Chelimo added world bronze to his Olympic silver, timing 13.33.30.
