Excerpt:

. Even Mengistu joined cunningly, clapping and smiling. A moment later, he rose suddenly and left without excusing himself. Unsuspectingly the chairman had given him a sidelong look but darted his eyes to the chamber.
A few minutes later, when the clock on the wall ticked six o’clock, the main gate of the great hall opened wide and revealed a horrifying scene that shocked the entire humanity in the hall. The conspiracy had come to the open now, naked, ugly for the entire Dergue to see. Led by Captain Zeleke, some forty soldiers armed with machine guns stormed the hall in two files.
Zeleke, attended by four guards, stepped forward as the soldiers spread left and right in half circle, pointing their machine guns at the members of the Dergue. The Head of the State, General Tafari was numb in disbelief. Alemayo froze with his mouth half-open. The rest of the Dergue remained seated, confused, eyes staring at Zeleke.
“What’s going on! Can anyone tell me!” shouted the vice-chairman, a man of boyish frankness in his manner, known for his bold but selfish remarks against the Dergue. After him came more protest, but Zeleke hushed them down instantly.
“Keep quiet! And be seated!” roared Zeleke. “Comrade Mengistu shall explain. Until then, I’m in charge, so do as I say!” Though he pretended to be tough, there were signs of indecisiveness in Zeleke’s articulation and manner.
