I think the book is a sort of a confession, a way of making amends for the damage he has done to Ethiopia by being on EPRDF's side during those horrendous wrongdoings he describes, rather than anything else. Most Efoita writings used to get on my nerves whenever I had a chance to skim through them, I couldn’t even think of buying an issue with my own money, as I remember, no matter how enticing the cover looked. I used to ask 'efoita for whom' much as Wendimu Chubero (the Dorze guy in the book) did. Yet, I remember my seething anger at reading somewhere on an issue of that magazine (which he mentioned in the book) featuring their fabricated version of a story ridiculing professor Mesfin that went back to his childhood in a pseudo-psychoanalytic garbage aimed at his explaining why he denies the existence of the Amhara as an ethnic group (not that I care about the professor any longer after he compromised his integrity in the form of his unholy interviews on VOA regarding the Kinjit split).
I particularly liked a few stories, that of his teacher Zimita, who shouted at him, most legitimately, 'Haven’t they fired you yet?' at a traffic red light; his revealing story of the telecommunications henchmen of EPRDF favoring Tigray, which seemed like a claim suspended on air but now is told by him as an actual fact; his revealing story of EPRDF's machinations against OLF to make them withdraw from the first regional elections, and their doggedness to stop at no moral frontiers or even political principles to ensure the continuance of their rule; OPDO's embarrassing record of not having any form of political orientation and the fact that their very existence in the political scene is driven by pure personal greed of the top guys; same goes for the impotent Amhara outfit named ANDM until lately headed by an Erit. Think of the guy Kassa Deme who, when asked to lend an Amhara cover for Bereket's interview about Eritrea's independence, didn't bother to read what it said but asked why he was not told to wear a tie when he was to be photographed! These are the guys that are running the show in ANDM at present.
I also liked his disarming honesty in terms of his own capacity and his mockery on the ludicrous intellectual capacity of most EPRDF stooges. By the way, have you read Mulugeta Lule’s 'Atifto Metifat”' Tesfaye also copiously mentions him and his book in this writing and his tremendous respect for the veteran journalist (later owner of Tobia newspaper) is evident. It also seems that his style was seriously influenced by Mulugeta Lule's book, which was a previous expose of a pervious regime (Derg) at exactly the level of responsibility occupied by Tesfaye during EPRDF; the influence is evident in his love of reference to classical literature and history, his style of narrative, the prominent politicians referred to in his book, and even the choice of his vocabulary.
The conflicting information he is willing to concede, however, makes one suspect of his true tendencies with regard to the nation of Ethiopia . For example, he denied that he was ever aware of his Tigrean heritage during the episode he recounted of 'Anley', the political education teacher who later became his sportswriter, and yet he later on admits that he chose to join the rebels because of 'his informed opinion of the rebels since childhood that was different' from his buddy soldier (Amde) from Gojam.
I also found his crocodile tears about Gondar as less than honest, considering the brand and tone of the sarcastic stories he was running at the time in 'Efoita' in keeping with EPRDF's marginalizing policy of the major urban centers, and vis-à-vis the plight of the Amharic speaking Ethiopian at the time.
It is furthermore virtually impossible that he could have escaped being identified by Shabia as a possible plant in EPRDF. I am sure of that because I was also approached by an Erit (who could have been a Shabia operative) in Wollo (a few years after these guys came to power) about clandestinely 'serving our nation' who mistakenly believed that I was an Erit because I was project manager at a company owned by an Erit. I was young and green and fresh out of college at the time, and I was in no mood for adventure, so I curtly rebuffed him by saying, 'I am an Ethiopian through and through, and if you insist on my origin, I am an Amhara', to which he replied that I should not be ashamed of my Eritrean heritage, and insisted on tracking me and talking to me on several occasions during my unruly young evenings in the small pubs of the small Southern Wollo town where I was working, until I rejected him repeatedly and he gave up. If it were these days, I would have played along in order to learn of his true intentions.
So Tesfaye, being a full-blooded Erit in EPRDF, it is impossible that he was not approached by them and not cooperating with them in one way or another, which could be the reason that he finally fled when he was discovered. I was inspired to read his previous book 'ye Burqa zimita', to see how he had approached the Oromo problem, which I am sure will give me further insight into his true sentiment to the nation of Ethiopia as you and I know it. In a way of provocation, he mentions a letter from someone on why 'Chala Chube Chebete' was an alphabet learning tablet. I would doubt whether he didn't realize that it has more to do with the phonetic advantage of collating same-root letters in the same sentence than a stereotyping purpose of 'Chala' with 'Chube'. I found the deliberate mention of this reader’s comment poisonous at best.
True, his motive is not crystal-clear and perhaps sinister but his story is revealing, and his Amharic is crisp. He also has a lot more up his sleeve than he is willing to concede. That is my conclusion. I think I will use material from this letter to send him my comments and hear what he has to say.
