EAS in Brief
The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences is an autonomous, non-profit, non-governmental organization established in March 2010 by a group of prominent scholars who wish to promote the Sciences to flourish and bring about development, prosperity and improved health services for the people of Ethiopia. The Academy aims to advance the development of all the sciences, including the natural sciences, mathematics, health sciences, agricultural sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities, fine arts and letters. It plans to do this by providing evidence base and non-partial advise to the Ethiopian Government on matters related to science, technology and innovation, organizing conferences and workshops on significant national issues, awarding prizes in recognition of excellence and publishing reports, journals as well as other periodicals and books. The Academy closely works with the relevant government ministries, universities and other organizations in its effort to achieve its goals.
Membership to the Academy falls into four categories, namely; Founding Fellows, Fellows, Associate Fellows and Honorary Fellows. The current Academy membership consists of 49 Founding Fellows who were selected based on a set of selection criteria that include recognition of their academic achievements, international stature and contributions at the national and international levels, including publications. In addition, their contribution for the growth of knowledge in Ethiopia has been assessed. Fellows, as well as Associate and Honorary Fellows are elected on an annual basis.
All members serve the Academy on voluntary basis through working groups and other standing committees to be established as deemed necessary. Two Standing Committees for Finance and Public relations have already been established.
The major objectives of the academy include:
To advise the Government of Ethiopia on issues pertaining to the quality and relevance of the sciences, in particular on issues related to science education in Ethiopia;
To promote the advancement of basic and applied sciences and to enhance innovative technologies;
To promote, support and recognize excellence in scientific research achieved by Ethiopian scientists;
To promote contact among Ethiopian scientists, and between them and the world scientific community;
To enable women and other underprivileged and marginalized groups to participate in and benefit from scientific works and discoveries.
EAS has adopted a strategic plan (2011-2015) that forms the basis for its programs and activities for the coming five years. The core programs that EAS aims to achieve are the following:
Increasing and strengthening the visibility and relevance of EAS;
Providing consensus building platforms on critical national issues;
Promoting science, technology and innovation;
Recognizing excellence; and
Building institutional capacity and sustainability of EAS.
Implementation of the strategic plan requires inputs from all fields of sciences. EAS has, therefore, established five discipline based working groups, also referred to as Sectoral Working Groups, in the fields of Agriculture; Engineering and Technology; Health; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences/ Humanities. The tasks of the working groups include:
Identification of critical national issues for consensus building amongst all stakeholders;
Identification of potential Fellows, Associate Fellows and Honorary Fellows for induction into the Academy as per regulations set in the Statute of the Academy;
Formulation of criteria for recognizing excellence in science;
Identification of potential areas of interest and subsequent collaboration with other academies in the region and beyond;
Identification of specific strategies for the promotion of science, technology and innovation.
