A political magazine whose editors and contributors included the "who is who" among the Eritrean and Tigrean intelligentsia, a few years back wrote the following:
...before the people living in the region called "Eritrea" are anything else, the are "Tigreans" first. The idea of "Tigreans" and "Eritreans" as a separate people was never ours but that of chauvinists whose goal it has been to weaken, break apart and finally conquer us. No "Tigrean" or "Eritrean" could ever have lost sight of the hidden and creeping intent of our adversaries. Therefore, the chauvinist class ought not be under any illusion that although "Eritrea" is politically independent, there exists no border, physical or otherwise between the people of "Tigrai" and "Eritrea."
...[and]if its war that these chavinists prefer... the people of Tigrai and Eritrea would accommodate any challenge with qualitative and quantitative zeal, vigor and thunder unseen and unheard of, in the history of Ethiopia."
"Editoria," "Ethiopian Commentator, September/December 1993, pp. 7-8. The term "chauvinist" is used both by th Eritrean and Tigrean intelligentsia to characterize Ethiopians who oppose the secession of Eritrea and the TPLF plan to create an ethnically federated Ethiopia.
