In the first half of the 1930s, the nations of Japan and Ethiopia drew closer together to the acute concern of all of Africa's colonial powers, most especially Italy. Much came to trouble Rome about Japanese activities including their economic and political encroachments into Northeast Africa. Rumors exaggerated the extent of the threat. Particularly vexing were reports of increasing Japanese military influence in Ethiopia. The threat of Japanese political, commercial, and military intrusions into Ethiopia to statesmen in London, Paris, Moscow, and elsewhere seemed sufficient to justify Italy's military preparations against Ethiopia from 1934 on. One issue for many came to symbolize Japan's expanding influence in Ethiopia, that is, the proposed marriage between Araya Abeba of Ethiopia and Kuroda Masako of Japan.
As Italy's dispute with Ethiopia grew during 1934 and 1935, Japan's leading nationalists, especially "Pan-Asianists," promoted a "solidarity movement" with Ethiopia. A most urgent supporter of Ethiopia was one of the ultranationalist groups, the Amur River Society [Kokuryu Kai, often misnamed the "Black Dragon Society" in English]. In June, the Kokuryu Kai organized Ethiopian Crisis Committee [Echiopia Mondai Iinkai]. Its membership saw the conflict between Italy and Ethiopia as pitting white and colored peoples against one another. Further, Japan was obligated to support Ethiopia, which admired, praised, and respected Japan. (5) Similarly, members of the Japanese-Ethiopian Society [Nihon Echiopia Kyokai] and the Great Japanese Turan Youth League [Dai Nihon Turan Seinen Renmei] prayed: "We wish the wrong-doings of the whites to be punished, and our friend Ethiopia achieve victory."(6)

One of the first intercessions that came upon the College as a body was in 1936 when Mussolini intended to invade Ethiopia. The College saw what lay behind this scheme of the enemy. Ethiopia, through the influence of the Emperor, was opening in a new way to Evangelical Missions and there was a prospect of widespread evangelisation in many areas.If the country was captured it could be the end of the Protestant Evangelical witness there.
