Some of his ideas may be imperfect, others impracticable; but a man who, rising from the clouds of Abyssinian ignorance and childishness, without assistance and without advice, has done so much, and contemplates such large designs, cannot be regarded as of an ordinary stamp.

A chief of the highest rank will ask, without shame, for the merest trifle, and send messenger after messenger to demand it. "We don't know you," they answered from the other bank. "You Guchumba (vagrants), go away from our lands."
"If you don't surrender voluntarily, we will shoot at you with the fire of our guns, we will take your livestock, your women and children. We are not Guchumba . We are from the sovereign of the Amhara (Abyssinians) Menelik."
"We do not know Amhara-Menelik. Go away! Go away!"
These talks brought no success, but when a dug-out canoe, found higher on the course of the river, arrived at our bank, the natives became more tractable and began to ask:
"Who is this Amhara-Menelik to whom we are supposed to submit?"
"We are Amhara, and Menelik is our great king."

Abyssinia , at periods of which we have authentic information, comprised the countries of Northern Abyssiniya and Shoa, now inhabited by Christans, with the intervening tribes of Gallas (Mohomedans who have interposed and occupied the fairest provinces by the right of the sword ) and the coast of the Red Sea from Tajoura to Sowakim ; towards the equator , enarea and Kaffa , now Galla kingdom ; and to the north - west , sennaar nearly to Kartoom.
As regards the general history of the country , I would refer to the reader to Ludolf and to Bruce , and would only again remind him that the empire of Ethiopia , properly speaking is naw entirely governed by the descendants of Mohamed Ali : whilist Abyssina , or what is left as still possessing the christian faith , obeys chiefs of its own creed or nation.
The Amharas are even yet little acquainted with guns; the most expert in the service of all the chiefs , even to shoa and the Wallo Gallas , being of Teegray origin , Of these latter the most skilful are said to be the Agammes.
